Problem Space
The number of Chinese students enrolling in American universities has grown to nearly a quarter million and preparing meals that remind them of home can be difficult and time-consuming for a number of reasons, such as the limitation of local ingredient and material, the complexity of recipes, and searching inefficiencies on existing recipe apps. Students are busy, they don't want to spend a lot of time making foods. The Chinese food is cooked with the intention of increasing the health benefits like longevity and having healing powers and medicinal value. More and more people like Chinese food but they think Chinese food is hard to make. Actually, making Chinese food could be easy. We want to make an application easier to use for people who interested in cooking Chinese food.
Process
Contextual Inquiry and Interviews
In contextual inquiry part, I was focusing on how people using the recipe when they were cooking. 2 people were observed when they were cooking by the direction of Chinese food recipe. 4 students including Chinese and American were interviewed. I have gathered data on how they cook and what kind of problems they met during cooking.
Competitive Analysis
Used the competitive analysis method to compare four different recipe apps including two Chinese apps and two American apps. In this part, I focusing on how to navigate the content, how to search a recipe and how to present a recipe.

Usability testing
I conducted 2 rounds of usability testing to validate designs like search process and recipe content. Specifically, I focussed on how participants navigated the homepage and search results pages, their expectations regarding filter options, and what content users expected to see in the recipe. Our test participants ranged in age from 22-38, including graduate students from China, India, France and the United States. Based on the usability issues we found and feedbacks from users, we changed our design iteratively.
